Montessori
Our program at Oakwood Children’s House is based upon the Montessori philosophy. Its basic principle is that a child’s curiosity about the world is his or her greatest asset.
The teacher’s goal is to cultivate children’s natural curiosity and love of knowledge The emphasis is on natural learning, guided by the hand, which Maria Montessori called the ‘chief teacher” of the child. Performing tasks in a tactile way helps children to focus their attention. All Montessori equipment allows children to reinforce their learning in this way.
Maria Montessori believed that during the early years, there are times when children are more sensitive to certain areas of their environment. The Montessori classroom gives children the opportunity to select, from as wide a range of activities as possible, those best suited to their stages of individual development.
